Spelling You See Level A: Listen and Write Universal Set
By Math-U-See

The "SpellingYouSee" program from Demme Learning is a unique, research-based homeschool spelling curriculum with seven levels that follow the developmental stages of language development. Developed by Dr. Karen Holinga, this program allows students to develop spelling skills naturally and at their own pace with the direction and encouragement of the instructor. Relying upon visual memory that's built through repeated reading and repeated writing, students will learn spelling through short daily activities that integrate copywork, reading, speaking, and listening, rather than relying on rote memorization for weekly tests.

Spelling You See Level A: Listen and Write is designed for young students as they move from the Preliterate Stage to the Phonetic Stage (see the "Spelling You See Philosophy" link above for an explanation of each stage). Following stages, not grade level, this level is for a beginning reader who is still learning letter names and sounds and how to hold a pencil properly when writing.

When determining placement, these are questions to ask:

  • Can my student focus on a worksheet for at least 10 minutes?

  • Can my student identify most of the letters of the alphabet?

  • Can my student write letters?

  • Can my student write fairly comfortably?

  • Does my student understand that letters make sounds?

  • If you answered "Yes" to all these questions, your child is ready to begin Listen and Write.

Listen and Write will provide lots of practice in writing individual letters and in hearing the sounds they make in simple words.

Thirty-six lessons focus on lowercase letter formation, consonants, and short vowels. Each lesson is divided into five parts (A through E); each is a daily, one-page worksheet designed to be completed in approximately 10 minutes. The first 15 lessons feature three-letter words and introduce one short vowel at a time. Later lessons progress to four and five letter words. Letter boxes help children learn sound-to-letter correspondence, which emphasizes the process of creating a word from individual sounds, as well as correct pencil grip and correct letter formation.

The Student Workbook features a checklist for students to start their lesson. Early lessons begin with room to trace and write featured letters and boxes in which they can trace and write the letters dictated to them from the Instructor's Handbook. Later lessons only include boxes to fill in with the dictated letters. Included stickers can be used to match a word from the day's lesson, or as a reward for a job well done.

The instructor's handbook features the philosophy and overview for the program, frequently asked questions, as well as short instructions for each lesson. This is followed by daily dictation lists (organized by lesson) needed for students to complete their work and general dictation lists with words arranged by phonetic principles (short a words, five letter words with digraphs).

This Spelling You See A Universal Set includes:

  • Spelling You See A Instructor Handbook, 46 pages with glossary, softcover. 9.25" x 8".

  • SpellingYouSee A: Listen and Write Student Workbook. 183 pages, softcover. This is a consumable, non-reproducible workbook that also includes sheets of stickers and a glossy handwriting chart. 8.5" x 11".

Spelling You See Level B: Jack and Jill is designed to move your student from the Phonetic Stage into the third developmental stage of Skill Development (see the "Spelling You See Philosophy" link for an explanation of each stage). Following stages, not grade level, this level is suggested for a developing reader who prints easily with lowercase letters and who knows most letter sounds, including long and short vowels.

When determining placement, these are questions to ask:

  • Can my student focus on a worksheet for at least 10 minutes?

  • Can my student focus on a worksheet for at least 10 minutes?

  • Can my student write comfortably?

  • Can my student give the sounds for most letters, including both long and short vowel sounds?

  • Is my student beginning to read?

Jack and Jill will provide practice in writing individual letters and in hearing the sounds they make in simple words. It will also provide opportunities for students to study words in the context of nursery rhymes by marking letter patterns, copying words and passages, and writing from dictation.

Thirty-six lessons focus on searching for common patterns in words, short vowels, correct letter formation, and consistent use of lower-case letters through the use of nursery rhymes. Lessons are divided into five parts (A through E); each part includes two daily worksheets. These lessons are split between two student workbooks; in Part I a new nursery rhyme is read each week, within which students find different details such as capitalization and punctuation. Part 2 continues the nursery rhyme theme, but now the instructor guides the student to find vowel and consonant patterns in each passage; students also begin more extended copywork.

The instructor's handbook features the philosophy and overview for the program, frequently asked questions, as well as short instructions for each lesson and a "Guide to Chunking." This is followed by passages for dictation, daily dictation lists (organized by lesson), and general dictation lists needed for students to complete their work. A line-listed answer key is also provided.

The "SpellingYouSee" program from Demme Learning is a unique, research-based homeschool spelling curriculum with seven levels that follow the developmental stages of language development. Relying upon visual memory that's built through repeated reading and repeated writing, students will learn spelling through short daily activities that integrate copywork, reading, speaking, and listening, rather than relying on rote memorization for weekly tests.

Spelling You See Level D: Americana continues your student's journey through the Skill Development stage (see the "Spelling You See Philosophy" link above for an explanation of each stage).

When determining placement, the following question should be asked:

  • Can my student comfortably write an entire paragraph? The following passage is taken from the previous level of Spelling You See and is written at the minimum reading level for Americana. Can your student read it without difficulty?Seahorses are fish, but they are not like other fish. Seahorses swim upright. They have a curved neck. They do not have scales. Their fins are very small, so they swim poorly. A seahorse uses its tail to hold onto sea grasses. A group of seahorses is called a herd--just like a herd of horses!Dictate the passage to your student and then answer the following questions:

    • Was my student able to complete the dictation with relative ease?

    • Was my student able to complete the dictation in 10 minutes or less?

    • Did my student correctly spell at least eight of these words from the dictation passage: fish, like, other, swim, have, curved, neck, small, tail, group, herd, horses?

    • If you answered "Yes" to all these questions, your child is ready to begin Americana.

Americana will provide opportunities for students to study words in the context of stories about events and people in American history. Students will mark various letter patterns, copy passages, and practice writing the stories from dictation.

Thirty-six lessons features nonfiction stories about American history and culture that gradually increase in reading level, providing opportunities for vocabulary development. Lessons are divided into five parts (A through E); each part includes two daily worksheets. These lessons are split between two student workbooks for ease of use. Three core student activities: chunking, copywork, and dictation, are emphasized to move spellings to long-term memory and providing experience with the irregular letter patterns in English.

The instructor's handbook features the philosophy and overview for the program, frequently asked questions, short instructions that cover individual and multiple lessons, and a weekly activity guide. This is followed by passages for dictation. A line-listed, highlighted answer key is also provided.

Relying upon visual memory that's built through repeated reading and repeated writing, students will learn spelling through short daily activities that integrate copywork, reading, speaking, and listening, rather than relying on rote memorization for weekly tests.

Spelling You See Level E: American Spirit continues to guide students through the Skill Development stage (see the "Spelling You See Philosophy" link above for an explanation of each stage). Following stages, not grade level, this level is suggested for a student who spells many common words confidently but who may not be ready for the more advanced reading level and content of Ancient Achievements..

When determining placement, ask this question:

  • Can my student write complete paragraphs comfortably ?The following passage is taken from the previous level of Spelling You See and is written at the minimum reading level for American Spirit. Can your student read it without difficulty ?As a young man, Johnny Appleseed learned how to grow apple trees. When settlers moved into Ohio and Indiana, he planted orchards for them. He also planted orchards of his own and sold trees. Johnny lived simply. He had no house. He walked from place to place. His clothes were ragged. He is remembered for helping many needy people. Dictate the passage to your student and then answer the following questions:

    • Was my student able to complete the dictation with relative ease?

    • Was my student able to complete the dictation in 10 minutes or less?

    • Did my student correctly spell at least eight of these words from the dictation passage: young, learned, apple, settlers, planted, simply, house, walked, clothes, people?

    • If you answered "Yes" to all these questions, your child is ready to begin American Spirit. The curriculum for this Spelling You See F, Ancient Achievements lesson plan can be found by using the following link~

784050: Spelling You See Level F: Ancient Achievements Universal Set

Spelling You See Level F: Ancient Achievements Universal Set
By Math-U-See

The "SpellingYouSee" program from Demme Learning is a unique, research-based homeschool spelling curriculum with seven levels that follow the developmental stages of language development.

Spelling You See Level F: Ancient Achievements is suggested for a student who are nearing the end of the Skill Development stage and are able to write complete paragraphs comfortably (see the "Spelling You See Philosophy" link above for an explanation of each stage).

The following passage is written at the minimum reading level for Ancient Achievements. Can your student read it without difficulty?

Philo was very interested in electronics. When he was a teenager, he found a stash of science magazines. He studied them carefully. He learned that scientists were trying to make a new machine. It would use electricity to send and show pictures. He thought about it. He talked with his science teachers. One day he drew a picture on the chalkboard. It showed how a television could work. Philo Farnsworth's plan was the first idea that worked.

Dictate the passage above to your student and then answer the following questions:

  • Was my student able to complete the dictation with relative ease?

  • Did my student complete the dictation in 10 minutes or less?

  • When writing the passage from dictation, did my student correctly spell at least ten of the words from this list? interested, science, magazines, studied, electricity, pictures, thought, talked, teachers, chalkboard, television, idea.

If you answered "Yes" to all these questions, your child is ready to begin Ancient Achievements. Ancient Achievements provides continued practice in the Skill Development stage of spelling with passages of gradually increasing difficulty. At the same time, it introduces students to interesting facts about word roots and more advanced word patterns. It is designed as a bridge to the Word Extension stage of spelling.

Thirty-six lessons feature nonfiction stories about ancient history, providing opportunities for vocabulary development and the mastery of everyday words. Lessons are divided into five parts (A through E); each part includes two daily worksheets. These lessons are split between two student workbooks for ease of use. Three core student activities: chunking, copywork, and dictation, are emphasized; for "chunking," the instructor reads the passage with the student and then helps the student find and mark various letter patterns in the passage. This level also features "spotlights" that are designed to introduce students to Word Extension, the stage of spelling that follows Skill Development.

The instructor's handbook features the philosophy and overview for the program, frequently asked questions, lesson-by-lesson instructions, and a weekly activity guide. This is followed by passages for dictation. A line-listed, highlighted answer key is also provided.

This Spelling You See Level F Universal Set Includes:

  • SpellingYouSee F: Ancient Achievements Student Workbook Part I: 183 pages, softcover.

  • SpellingYouSee F: Ancient Achievements Student Workbook Part II: 183 pages, softcover. Both are consumable, non-reproducible workbooks.

  • Instructor's Handbook, 70 pages with glossary, softcover. 9.25" x 8".

Spelling You See G, Modern Milestones For Grades 6 - 8
More Info
The curriculum for this Spelling You See G, Modern Milestones lesson plan can be found by using the following link~

982060: Spelling You See Level G: Modern Milestones Universal Set

Spelling You See Level G: Modern Milestones Universal Set
By Math-U-See

The "Spelling You See" program from Demme Learning is a unique, research-based homeschool spelling curriculum with seven levels that follow the developmental stages of language development.

Spelling You See Level G: Modern Milestonesis suggested for students who are able to complete this skills assessment below successfully. Also, the student should be able to follow written instructions and work independently (see the "Spelling You See Philosophy" link above for an explanation of each stage).

The following passage is written at the minimum reading level for Modern Milestones. Can your student read it without difficulty?

The Chinese were the first people to print books. Their language uses thousands of characters instead of a simple alphabet. For many years they carved each page into a wooden block. Later, each character was carved from clay. The characters were baked so they would harden. Next, they were fastened onto iron plates. A page was printed from each plate. Thankfully the clay characters could be used over and over! The process was a challenge. Still, it was easier than copying books by hand.

Dictate the passage above to your student and then answer the following questions:

  • Was my student able to complete the dictation with relative ease?

  • Did my student complete the dictation in 10 minutes or less?

  • When writing the passage from dictation, did my student correctly spell at least ten of the words from this list? language, thousands, characters, alphabet, carved, wooden, harden, fastened, iron, thankfully, process, challenge, easier.

If you answered "Yes" to all these questions, your child is ready to begin Modern Milestones. Modern Milestones is written for students who are in the Word Extension stage of spelling. It assumes that students can spell most words that they can read, although they may be uncertain about how those words change when adding prefixes or suffixes. While this level incorporates principles and activities from previous levels of Spelling You See, it is written for students who are ready to study specific word patterns and work more independently. A solid foundation in the Skill Development stage is essential for success in Modern Milestones.

Thirty-six lessons feature events in the Modern age, providing opportunities for vocabulary development and the mastery of everyday words. Lessons are divided into five parts (A through E); each part includes two daily worksheets. These lessons are split between two student workbooks for ease of use. Unlike in previous levels of SpellingYouSee, students will not use chunking, but a different marking scheme to identify base words, prefixes, and suffixes, with more instruction in this student workbook set to encourage independent learning.

The instructor's handbook features the philosophy and overview for the program, frequently asked questions, lesson-by-lesson instructions, and a weekly activity guide. This is followed by passages for dictation. A line-listed, highlighted answer key is also provided.

The Spelling You See Level G Universal Set Includes:

  • SpellingYouSee G: Modern Milestones Workbook Part I: 183 pages, softcover.

  • SpellingYouSee G: Modern Milestones Student Workbook Part II: 183 pages, softcover.

  • Instructor's Handbook, 70 pages with glossary, softcover. 9.25" x 8".
