773801: Well-Ordered Language Level 1A Student Edition

Well-Ordered Language Level 1A Student Edition
By Tammy Peters & Dr. Dan Coupland / Classical Academic Press

The Well-Ordered Language curriculum from Classical Academic Press presents the study of language in a way that's designed to appeal to a child's inborn curiosity and desire to collect and order.

The narrated chapters are written directly to children and feature enjoyable black-and-white illustrations plus samples from children's literature and poetry. There are eight chapters in this one-semester curriculum; each begins with an introduction that teaches the concepts and the choral analysis of the sentence (which models the focus on the chapter). This is followed by the "Lessons to Learn" section, which includes daily 15-minute lessons labeled as Introductory, A, B, C, and Review. The 15-minute "Lessons to Practice" pages correspond (and are interwoven with) the "Lessons to Learn" pages; these are designed for guided class practice and are a core part of daily lessons. Finally, the "Lessons to Enjoy" section is a weekly, 30+ minute option that provides a poem, fable, and enrichment activities.

The Well-Ordered Language Level 1A (WOL 1A) will introduce students to four kinds of sentences (declarative, interrogatory, imperative, exclamatory), subject and predicate, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, direct objects, subject pronouns, and helping verbs. Students will learn to identify the parts of a sentence and how words behave in a sentence. Framed around analysis, each chapter includes multiple sentences for students to analyze aloud and on paper, as a class and/or individually. This program is designed for teachers and students to actively engage with each other through reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as with physical movement, songs, and chants. Teachers start the lesson by explaining the concept to students through active engagement with selected sentences; teachers then model the structural analysis on the board while students speak the analysis in chorus. The structural analysis builds with each chapter and prepares students for diagramming.

Three suggested schedules are included for 3, 4, and 5 lessons per week; each chapter assumes a 30-40 minute period. 8 chapters total. Covers 1 semester of material.

Grades 3 or 4 & up. 252 pages, softcover.

The Well-Ordered Language curriculum from Classical Academic Press presents the study of language in a way that's designed to appeal to a child's inborn curiosity and desire to collect and order. Teachers and students will use language skills-reading, writing, speaking, and listening-along with physical movement, songs, and chants-to engage with the grammatical concepts in each lesson.

Well-Ordered Language 2A covers one semester; it is the first half of the last level in a four-part/two-level series (e.g. Level 1 A & B, Level 2 A & B).

Students will learn to identify the parts of a sentence and understand how words behave in a sentence. As students see the components of language, they will be able to apply their knowledge by expressing their thoughts clearly and accurately. Well-Ordered Language Level 2A will introduce students to:

  • Four kinds of sentences (declarative, interrogatory, imperative, exclamatory) and principal elements
  • Adverbs
  • Adjectives
  • Predicate verbs and direct objects
  • Predicate nominatives
  • Predicate adjectives
  • Predicate review
  • Possessive nouns

The previous level, Well-Ordered Language Level 1, helped students to master the eight parts of speech, along with object pronouns, prepositional and adverbial phrases, compound subjects, compound verbs, and compound objects. Any student who mastered these concepts should be prepared for Well-Ordered Language Level 2. In Book 2A, students will review and strengthen skills learned in Level 1 and be introduced to several new concepts. Student using this text will also learn to diagram sentences, visualizing the grammatical relationships within sentences. Though it's recommended the Well-Ordered Language series is started from the beginning, if students are comfortable with the eight parts of speech and their functions, they can start directly in Level 2A.
