Meaning of Colored Checkboxes

By | Assignments

Ever wonder what the red, yellow, and green colors that appear in the checkboxes next to assignments mean? Read on to find out!

Homeschool Planet Assignments User Guide

Meaning of Checkbox Colors next to Assignments

When you click on a checkbox it will turn green. Click again and it will move to the next color. Missed your color- just click again and cycle through the options!

  • Green means that the assignment has been completed and ready for grading if grading has been set up for the assignment.
  • Yellow means that the assignment is in progress. For example, your student has a reading assignment that they started but aren’t able to finish. The assignment can be marked yellow to let you know that it’s in progress but not yet completed. Another example of why the box might be marked yellow is to notify the teacher that an assignment needs to be graded before changing it to green (completed).
  • Red means that the assignment was not completed or is past due. This is a great way to know when a student has not finished their work, needs additional help, or when an assignment is past the due date. Once the assignment has been assessed by either the parent/teacher or student, it can be changed to yellow or green.

Students love this feature, as it provides them with a feeling of accomplishment. You can set up a system with your student to allow them some freedom, responsibility, and accountability for their schoolwork. We think that this helps build confidence and character in students.

Because parents use the checkboxes in a variety of ways, we hope that you will find the method that will work best for your family.

Moving Assignments

By | Assignments

The ability to move assignments from one day to another without the use of an eraser is definitely a favorite feature for Homeschool Planet users. Learn a couple of the ways to move your assignments in the directions below.

Homeschool Planet Assignments User Guide

Moving Assignments

Following are different ways to move assignments in our online homeschool planner!

Drag and Drop

  1. After logging into your account, click on the assignment or activity you want to move and drag it to the date you want. (This is more easily done in the Calendar mode as opposed to the Planner mode, although it can be done in either view.)
  2. A pop-up message will appear asking if you are sure you want it to change the date for this one class. To confirm the move, click the “OK, change only this one” button.
  3. A new screen will appear, giving you choices (Leave it where it is, Carry forward and leave the rest of schedule alone, or Carry forward and shift schedule by one day). Make a selection, then click the “OK” button. Your assignment(s) will now be on the new date(s), depending on the option you selected. Please note that if you drag an assignment to the day previous and tell the software you want the scheduled shifted it will move the assignment which is already scheduled on that day.

Edit Class screen

  1. Click on the class you want to modify and choose the “Edit” option.
  2. In the “Edit Class” screen, locate the assignment you want to move and select the “More…” drop-down menu at the end of the assignment row on the far right. You will see several options for moving the assignment. Select the option that best suits your needs.
  3. Alternatively, you can hover over the assignment to the left of the white bar and a double-ended arrow will appear. This will allow you to drag and drop the assignment where you want.
  4. When you are satisfied with your changes, click “Save and Close” button in the lower right of the window.

Rescheduling Helper

  1. Hover over the “Helpers” icon in the upper menu, then choose the “Rescheduling Helper” option. You can view a more detailed entry about using the Rescheduling Helper, here.
  2. When the selection window opens, choose the option that best describes your need.
  3. After making your selection, a new box will open. You will see a list of assignments to the left and available actions that can be taken listed across the top on the right. The colored lines coming down from the actions help with finding the correct action you need for the assignment.
  4. Choose the appropriate option you want for each assignment.
  5. Once all the assignments are marked, click the “OK” button in the lower right-hand corner of the window. Your changes will now be displayed on your calendar.

Assignments Not Showing up in Digests

By | Assignments

Are you wondering why your students’ work is not showing up in your digest emails? This entry will explain how to make sure you have entered actual assignments to check off and not just class subjects and titles. Read on, friends!

Homeschool Planet Assignments User Guide

Making sure you have entered assignments!

It can be confusing to get a Daily or Weekly Digest and see no assignments listed in your emails! When there is nothing entered in the assignments tab, the system does not recognize assignments scheduled for that particular day of class.  The class is scheduled for that day but no work has yet been “assigned”.  The class is simply acting as a placeholder on your calendar until you enter some assignment information.

Here are some User Guide articles that will help you as you get started entering assignment text into your calendar, after which the digest emails will populate with the information you enter in that tab for each class.  These entries have video tutorials that will be of benefit to you so you can visualize what we mean when we use the term “assignment”:

Assignment Lists

By | Assignments, Reports

Create and customize an Assignment List so your students, or you, can track what needs to be completed in a day, week, month, or timeline that you specify with your Homeschool Planet planner. The step-by-step directions below will help you to customize this report so it works best for YOUR family’s needs!

At Homeschool Planet users who want a printout of work assigned can choose between three basic formats. Each format can be printed for a single day, a week, or a month. Additionally it can be printed for one student at a time, all students, or a combination of students. Some parents want a printed list for their grammar students but allow their middle school and high school students to log into Homeschool Planet directly. Since each family has unique needs we have tried to create multiple options. We recommend you play around with views and combinations to find what suits your family the best.

The three formats for assignment printouts~

  • An Assignment List is a list of individual assignments to be completed (or that have been completed) over a specific range of time. The assignments are in a list format down the page. It is printed in black and white.
  • The Planner View lists the same assignments in the same format as what you see on the screen while in Planner Mode. It is also in list format, but with much more “white space”~ some parents enjoy the less cluttered look and others find it takes too much paper to print using this format. It can be printed in black and white or in color.
  • The Calendar View prints again, like the format seen in the Calendar view on your computer screen. It looks more like a typical “planner” or “calendar” view with the days of the week across the top and the assignments for each day in columns under the appropriate headings. It also can be printed in black and white or color.

    * Subject/Category– If you wish to limit the assignments or activities included select only those you desire with a check mark. If you want all items to appear you mean leave them all unchecked.
    * No Earlier Than/No Later Than– The default is to print just “today’s” lessons. If you wish to change the date parameters do so by adjusting the dates included here. It can be in the past or in the future.
    * School Year– Select the school year you wish to create the report for.
    * Category– Limit the grading categories included by checking only those you wish to see in the report or leave them all unchecked to see all assignments.
    * Completion– Choose whether to use completed assignments, uncompleted assignments, or both.
    * Resources– Make the appropriate selection for which resources you desire to be included.
    * Select OK to save your choices.
  4. There is a “Layout” menu across the top of the pop-up. Choose the option that best meets your needs.
