Understanding Grading Scales

By | Grading

Homeschool Planet calculates a numeric score for each class, between 0 and 100, and uses the grading scales set up in your account to convert those scores to letter grades. For information on setting up the numeric to letter equivalents for your homeschool, as well as +/- and pass/fail options see the directions below.

Directions for Understanding Grading Scales

  1. The first step to setting up your Grading Scales is to open the Master page for Grading Scales. To do this go to Settings> Grading>Scales.
  2. You will see three categories: Standard, Standard +/-, and Pass/No Credit.
  3. Homeschool Planet has pre-set each Grading Scale with a traditional scale but you can adjust each section as you see fit. To do so simply type in the numbers you would like to see. Each number represents the minimum score which much be achieved for the corresponding letter grade.
    • You can find an article on selecting Grading Scales from The Home Scholar, here.
  4. Please note that Homeschool Planet uses standard rounding metrics so a grade of 89.6 will be counted as a grade of 90.
  5. At this point you should select the Grading Scale you intend to use most as your default. You will be able to override this option in any individual class.
  6. Don’t forget to hit Save when you have finished adjusting your Grading Scales!

Setting Up Grading Categories

By | Grading

Setting up grading in your Homeschool Planet account begins with choosing the Grading Categories you would like to make available in your classes. To learn how to do this see the directions below.

Directions for Setting up Grading Categories

  1. After logging into your account, hover over the “Settings” icon on the upper right side of your screen, then select the “Grading” option.
  2. When the window opens, you will be on the “Grading” tab of the “Settings” window. At the top of this window are some instructions for creating categories.
  3. If you have not added additional categories previously you will find four Grading Categories: Homework, Project, Quiz, and Test. If you have added other categories to any class or lesson plan they will be in this list as well.
  4. If you would like to create a new category, locate and select the “Add a new category” text link, immediately to the right of the Grading Categories title. A new editable field will be added to your list where you can change “New Category” to anything you need.
  5. You can edit the name of any Grading Category at any time but please take note that if you change the name of category it will be changed in every location where that Grading Category was used. It is almost always best to add a new category rather than edit an existing one.
  6. You can also delete a category, which was added in error, by selecting the red X next to the Grading Category. If you delete a category and have assignments in classes which utilize that category they will stay intact, but with a line through them and you will NOT be able to re-add the category. We strongly recommend nor deleting any categories which have been used for grading in any classes.
  7. When you are satisfied with your entries, click the “Save” button in the lower right corner.

Adding Grading to a Class or Lesson Plan

By | Grading

With Homeschool Planet you can add grade tracking to any class in just a few simple steps. To find out how, see below!

Directions for Adding Grading to a Class

  1. Select the title of the class you would like to add grading to from the Calendar and choose edit.
  2. Click on the Grading tab and then choose Setup grading.
  3. Choose the grading scale you would like to use.
  4. Place a check mark next to the grading categories you would like to use.
    • You can edit the categories by selecting the add or edit categories link.
  5. For each category you checked, enter the percent (0-100), that category contributes to the final grade of the class.
    • Example: Homework (30), Test (70). Make sure the percentage equals 100 % and then select Save.
  6. Once you select Save, a list of all assignments already added to the class will appear. Select a grading category for each assignment and then choose OK.
    • The radio button at the top of each grading option will select that category for all assignments. So if 90% of the assignments are homework and 10% are tests it would be easiest to first select the top button under Homework and then change just tests to the Test category.
    • The not graded category is for assignments you would like to be checked off, but do not need a grade.

Directions for Adding Grading to a Lesson Plan

  1. Go to the Lesson Plan Library and select the edit link next to the title of the plan you would like to add grading to.
  2. The lesson plan will open to the Assignments tab. There is a column called “Category” next to the “Do this” (assignment) column.
  3. Choose the category for each assignment from the drop-down menu.
    • If you need to add additional Grading Categories you can do that from the Grading tab.
  4. Once you have selected the category for each assignment select the Grading tab.
  5. For each grading category which has at least one active assignment enter the percent (0-100), that category contributes to the final grade of the class.
    • Example: Homework (30), Test (70). Make sure the percentage equals 100 % and then select Save.
    • Categories which have not been given any assignments will be grayed out.
  6. Select save and close.

Please note you can apply a lesson plan to the calendar, thereby making it a class, and use Adding Grading to a Class directions as well.

Editing Grades

By | Grading

Sometimes a student improves their grade after it has been entered and recorded. Other times you may discover that you have entered a grade incorrectly. Whatever the reason you need to change a grade in your Homeschool Planet you will find it a very simple process. To learn how see the directions below.

Directions for Editing a Grade

The first step to editing a grade you have entered in Homeschool Planet is to locate the grade that needs to changed. There are two options to locate a previously entered grade. Use the one best for your situation.

    • If you know the date of the assignment that needs a grade change you can go to that date and class and select the “grades” link for that day. A pop-up box will appear where you can just write over the previously entered grade(s).
    • If you know the class, but not the exact date of the grade you wish to update, or if you have several grades in one class to edit, you can select the title of the class from anywhere on the calendar and then choose edit. Next navigate to the Grading tab. Uncheck the box which reads, “Show only ungraded assignments” and all the previous entered grades for that class will appear. Once you located the assignment to be changed in that list you can write over the previously entered grade.

That is all there is to it!

Grouped Grading

By | Grading

Grouped Grading is designed for those times when you would like to have two or more separate classes combined for a single grade. An example of this would be setting up separate classes for Spelling, Grammar, and Literature but desiring a single Language Arts grade on your Report Card. Homeschool Planet makes this a snap with our Grouped Grading feature. Learn how to utilize this helpful feature below.

Creating a Group for grading allows you more flexibility when scheduling classes by letting you combine the scores from assignments in multiple classes into a single grade. You can schedule different topics in a single subject as separate classes, with different start and end dates, on different days of the week, etc., but still pull all of those grades together into a single grade for the subject.

Directions for Grouped Grading

  1. After logging into your account, locate one the classes which you would like to make part of the grading group, click on the class title, and then choose the “Edit” option.
  2. When the “Edit Class” window opens, locate and select the “Grading” tab, then click on the “Setup grading” text link.
  3. When the “Setup Grading” window opens, select the “Grouping” tab at the top.
  4. You will see a list of current grading groups. You can add the current class to one of those groups or you can Create a new group.
    • These instructions assume you are creating a new group.
  5. Select the “Show only (SUBJECT NAME) classes” box at the top to show only classes you have created with the same subject name.
  6. Check or uncheck any classes you wish to be included in your group grading then click the “Save” button.
  7. You will be back on the “Grouping” tab, where you can edit the “Title of group:” as well as review the “Classes in group:” information. Once you are satisfied with your group, select the “Save” button in the bottom right corner.
  8. If you have not set up your grading categories, a pop-up box will appear alerting you to this and you will be able to select either the “Let me select some categories” or “Delete it” buttons. Selecting the “Delete it” option deletes the group you just created.
  9. If you do have grading categories set up, but some assignments are not yet categorized, the “Choose New Categories” window will open that shows uncategorized assignments. In this window, you will be able to make choices for how you want them categorized or if you would like to leave them as-is. Once you have made your selections, select the “OK” button in the bottom right corner.
  10. You will now be returned to the “Grading” tab. Select the “Save and Close” button in the bottom right of the window.
